On one side have role overload, role ambiguity, role conflict and job insecurity as IVs while another side job satisfaction as DV. Can Job stress act as a mediator among aforesaid IVs and Dv. If Yes, then please give some references.
the negative impact of role stress on JS has been shown for example in
• Örtquist, D. & Wincent, J. (2006). Prominent Consequences of Role Stress: A Meta-Analytic Review. International Journal of Stress Management, 13(4), 399-422.
here you might find even more studies on this topic.
In case of a model testing regarding stress as a mediator it is important to check for common method bias and multicollinearity due to the relatively closeness of predictors and mediator. Role stress measures might include items that capture strain (which would be a result of the impact of stressors). It remains to be checked whether some measures unfortunately capture stressors and strain at a time. See an interesting article on the trade-off regarding common meth. bias and scale reliability:
• Conway, J. M., Lance, C. E. (2010). What Reviewers Should Expect from Authors Regarding Common Method Bias in Organizational Research. Journal of Business Psychology, 25, 325-334.
It might be recommendable to use measures of strain such as Maslach’s burnout inventory or the like. See for background
• Maslach, C.; Victor, F. (1988). Burnout, Job Setting and Self-Evaluation among Rehabilitation Counselors. Rehabilitation Psychology. 33, 85-93.
You need also to think about potential buffers/moderators such as elf-efficacy, social support or emotional stability – this the model could become quite complex… see e.g. on the role of social support
• Frese, M. (1999). Social Support as a Moderator of the Relationship Between Work Stressors and Psychological Dysfunctioning: A Longitudinal Study With Objective Measures. Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, 4(3), 179-192.
A relatively simple way to compute mediators and/or moderators can be done via mere regression analysis, this was done e.g. by
• Speier, C. & Frese, M. (1997). Generalized self - efficacy as a mediator and moderator between control and complexity at work and personal initiative. Human Performance, 10, 171-192.
Eatough et al. (2011) showed relationships of role stressors with organizational citizenship behaviour in their meta-analysis and tested also direct links between role stress and JS. So it remains to carefully argue why you would want to conceptualize stress as a mediator in the first place, you need to check for direct paths anyway from a theoretical point of view. Thus a simpler model might be useful due to reasons of parsimony.
