any surfactant will modify clays due to adsorption. Cationic ones will be bound to the 'faces' and internal layers if accessible. Depending on the ratio of surfactant per available surface surfactant concentration in aqueous phase will be reduced below cmc or not. Above cmc there will be a part of surfactant adsorbed, which can easily be desorbed by washing with water.
