Can I publish a study protocol (RCT) if I am unsure the research will go ahead due to funding?

I am wondering about publishing a protocol for an interventional, prospective trial, but I am unsure about funding the trial. On one hand, I believe publishing a study protocol generates interest, on the other hand, I am not sure if there will be funding or participation from the relevant clinics.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: The possibility of publishing a study protocol under uncertain funding hinges on the policies of the respective journal; some will not consider study protocols without major external funding or ethics approval for publication.

In any event, adherence to the SPIRIT guidelines for the reporting of trial protocols and transparent reporting with regard to the status of the research at submission are essential.
