Hi so I am doing a systematic review to examine the effect of a surgical produce A vs surgical procedure B on patients by using patient reported outcome scores.

There is only 1 RCT and the rest are case series for surgical procedure A or surgical procedure B with a mean no of patients of 50.

  • Can I do a metanalaysis with these case series ? Or should I just say there is not enough evidence to do it as there is only 1 RCT.
  • Can I pool the mean post operative PROM and mean preop PROM and check for the difference in improvement for surgical Procedure A vs Procedure B ? Or would this be a huge no no in the world of statistics? As one is assuming the populations baseline characteristics are the same . *
  • Is it right to say that even if I do NO 2 I can not compare the results of A or B as the population demographics are different
  • If I can't / you would not recommended to do no 2 and no 3 what should I do with my case series ? Is there a good way of presenting the results in a graph or I can only present them in a table ?
  • Please understand that most case series done by surgeons are usually retrospective and done within their unit. By aim is to highlight what we know so far and the future, where i will be doing large data registry work.

I understand I will use the GRADE approach to check for bias.
