We are frequently designating Lectotypes for names of flowering plants on the basis of digital images of herbarium specimens examined by us deposited in recognized herbaria. Now I came across a digital image of a herbarium specimen housed in a particular European herbarium which, in my opinion, represents a distinct variety of an Indian species. I have not come across any duplicate or similar/matching herbarium specimen in any Indian herbarium and therefore I wish to describe and recognize the new variety on the basis of the digital image of the said specimen examined by me. Is there any rule in the Code which prevents such a designation?
