I am required to do a project where I have to calculate discharge of streams/ watersheds in a high altitude area with extremely treacherous terrain. Will it be possible to achieve this objective using GIS and remote sensing, without field observations ?

You can calculate the stream discharge and watersheds using GIS techniques.
The Stream Discharge is the volume of water moving down a waterway per unit of time. It is most commonly expressed in cubic feet per seconds or gallons per day. To calculate discharge, multiply the area of water in a channel cross section by the average velocity of water in that cross section.
There are several factors that affect stream discharge. The velocity of the water affects it; faster water means more passes per second so more discharge. The width and depth of the river also affects it; a larger river at the same speed will have higher discharge.

Understand the discharge rate, know the total area covered by the water and multiply the area by the water average velocity of the cross section which is the same idea with Samuel Akande.
In an attempt to produce a reliable source of water, the water quality model QUAL2Kw was put through calibration and validation tests. This model was implemented in the river Tungabhadra of India. This worked quite well for the project at hand but showed certain irregularities. Different Quality Management methods exist currently and for this project, their impact in DO concentrations was examined based on 1) The ability to augment the flow; 2) The ability to oxygenate the source, and; 3) The ability to modify pollution loads. With the impacts realized, the study helped us understand that local oxygenation is effective when considering the increment of Do levels. There was also the understanding that a combination of the factors (flow augmentation, pollution load modification, and source oxygenation) is a necessity as far as the minimum DO concentrations must be realized. With this quality model results, there is the confidence that the implementation of the QUAL2Kw model will be an appropriate choice for future river water quality policies.
