An experiment I conducted had somewhat high mortalities in a control Isochrysis treatment. About 90% of these mortalities occurred at cell densities above 1 x 10^6. I suspect that high cell densities caused physical irritation resulting in respiratory distress and death in fishes. Any citations supporting this idea are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your answer! Yes I have heard of species such as Chaetoceros causing irritation and mortality but nothing in the realm of haptophytes. The experiment is now over so there is no way of examining DO but it is very likely that DO depletion was a the cause of death in these treatments. However, as I did not measure DO before and after I cannot cite this as a definitive cause. There was a light and dark cycle and the experimental volume was small roughly 20 ml, so on the small side. The cultures were not axenic but were grown in nutrient replete medium.
