I would like to know is Fiber Optic based methods for landslide detection.Optical Fiber based sensors are mostly directional in nature,ie it measures strain in the direction of fiber.But for measuring strain change on the rocks how we have to pack FBG so that it can detect the cause or initiation of Land Slide
FBG certainly useful in landslide detection. Can be best use in uniform orientation of rock mass discontinuities. For complex nature of discontinuity in rock mass more work in designing, packing and deployment of FBG is to be done.
I think it's is feasible but not sure that FBGs are generally used over the long distances such a system you would likely require.
The other fibre-based sensing possibility is to use Stimulated Brillouin Scattering detection, using standard singlemode fibre. I believe it has been used by NTT in Japan to detect seismic events. Commercial SBS systems (basically elaborate OTDRs) are availablle.
Agreed with David Stockton with submission that to deal with landslide detection all possible inputs must be taken care off landslide area specific.
Thanks for the suggestions, But what about the directiona sensititvity of the FIber optic sensors.What is your opinion on placind the FBG.Perpendiculatr to suface means bore hole insertion or spreading the fiber along the surface will be the best option
Directional sensitivity is used in structural health monitoring - orientation of FBGs works. FBG based landslide detection systems I understand are being explored in China.
But for the detection we need to orient the FBG ?How this arrangement needs to be done?
