The issue of energy storage technology development is one of the most important topics of energy development now and in the future. Currently, these technologies are not yet perfect, but technological progress is also constantly being implemented in this field. Energy based on renewable energy sources is developed in connection with the growing importance of environmental policy, implementation of the principles of sustainable development, including, among others, the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, whose increase in emissions over the last over 100 years has played an important role in the ongoing global warming process. The solution to the problem of possible instability of energy supplies from energy based on renewable energy sources is on the one hand to improve energy storage technology but also by diversifying energy sources and improving the technology of producing energy from specific renewable energy sources. Technological progress caused, among others the fact that current photovoltaic cells allow the production of energy regardless of the degree of sunlight in the daytime hours (in the context of the entire time of day). In addition, the goal of reducing the costs of energy storage, which can be high and absorb a significant portion of the energy generated, is the key issue to diversify various energy sources based on renewable energy (wind farms, photovoltaic panels, hydropower, nuclear, energy based on biogas, biomass combustion, waste incineration plants, etc.). In addition to the development of electromobility, also hydrogen-fueled motor vehicles can be a significant relief for the energy system.

Yes, storage is certainly one way of addressing the intermittency problem, but most likely a portfolio of different measures is needed (in order to address this efficiently), including introducing more flexibility on the demand side. See, for instance, the attached report.

important is to understand that you are only talking about electricity. But you have to think further, there is "sector coupling" between electricity, heat and mobility, which is really important to know: If you have to much wind, you can make (e.g.) H, and this again can be used in every sector.

So you have several options:

1) storage with batteries

2) sector coupling

3) "overbuild" the renewable capacities and build "big grids" to have an exchange, e.g. in overall Europe

4) do not forget bioenergy! Biogas can be stored and used if wind and PV is not producing energy. Acting like this, you would have in Germany an important capacity from up to 15-20 GW, if you use biogas only 2000-5000 h ("surplus capacity of installed capacity"). Here are two papers explaining it

Increasing the storage capacity of your renewable energy source can solve the problem of intermittency of renewable energy sources to some extent if the output energy from your renewable energy system is greater than your storage system. Moreover stating the actual intermittent problem will really help in providing precise answers.

Very good answer. I agree with you. But I would like to point out that current nuclear energy (fission), although it does not emit CO2 into the atmosphere, it cannot be considered as a renewable energy source since it needs fossil fuel.

An intermittent energy source is any source of energy that is not continuously available for conversion into electricity and outside direct control because the used primary energy cannot be stored. Intermittent energy sources may be predictable but cannot be dispatched to meet the demand of an electric power system. Batteries can’t solve the world’s biggest energy-storage problem. One startup has a solution.

A very good question , and the problem is storing energy in a very large scale that would be viable and commercially justified .

Perhaps only dams , only if in proper location , can be used for storing energy at that scale , and I wonder if any other energy storage solution, at that scale, is available at present .

To address the commercial viability of energy storage systems in many of the responses, consider the locational value of those storage systems. Generally, the locational value is greater in a more densely populated area because if the power goes out there is more harm done to electrical grid users because there are more people involved thus making the locational value greater than a less densely populated area. Locational value has to also take into account the $/kw. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Just like renewable energy systems(RES), the energy storage systems (ESS) needs to be optimally allocated in order to have the desired result. This relates to the locations and sizes to be dispatched. Ongoing research are aimed to enhance the control with respect to operating PFs and VI for RES. These need to be considered when planning the ESS.

I totally agree with all of the above colleagues' comments. Energy storage can support systems strongly and day after day, which is developed to be higher capacity in charging and discharging and the amount of storage.
