DELIVERY: eLearning is a means for delivery through the use of technology. In a more sophisticated platform, eLearning may provide some interaction, i.e. dialog between learner and the knowledge base machine. For distance learning (distance between learner and knowledge base), eLearning is useful. However, the limitation is access to technology. The removal of live instruction makes eLearning incomplete in human-2-human contact in the learning context, i.e. live interaction and association between learners and teacher.
NECESSITY OF LIVE INSTRUCTOR: eLearning is a supplemental medium. It is not a substitute for human teaching. The interaction between teacher and students remains a critical component in learning process, i.e. emotional support, teaching style, sharing of personal & professional experience in the classroom. eLearning may enrich the conventional learning environment and medium, but the needs for human teacher is not easily replaceable.
INSTITUTIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE: Conventional school has a physical location, 4-walls, live teachers and the administrative support infrastructure to serve and support the learning process. A degree from an actual institution with people and location would always provides the emotional comfort of credibility and trust, than a degree from a website.
No, e-learning can never be able to replace the quality of classrooms learning. However, it is a source to teach those who are unable to reach to classrooms because of some social limitations etc.
I also believe that e-learning cant replace a classrooms. Why? It is immposible to control the class. With e-learning everybody is more relaxed and usually dosent take a professor serious.
The main problem associated with e-learning is the lack of social integration. In classroom setting there is formal and informal face-to-face interaction as well as cultural interactions. In a classroom, the student not only develops his or her technical skills but can also develop presentation skills. There is interaction with people with different mind sets and a student can gain versatility. The teacher’s role in online learning is mainly that of a facilitator. There is less direct teacher-to-student interaction than normally found in the classroom. Learning is largely self motivated, and the student bears more individual responsibility to manage time and complete tasks. E-learning may not be able to replace the traditional classroom.
