The majority of dental intraoral x-ray equipment employs cylindrical collimaters, but rectangular collimaters greatly reduce radiation exposure. Can existing equipment be retrofitted and if so, how difficult and expensive would it be?
Yes, thank you. I've discovered there are a variety of products available, but one dentist I spoke with was reluctant to make the change because it would also involve different shaped supplies (film holders and film), so without a stronger incentive or price support -- especially when the risk is considered negligible -- change will be slow. I suspect that product visibility is also problematic. I asked someone who specialized in selling refurbished dental x-ray machines if they could be retrofitted with rectangular collimaters and he said it would be difficult and not worth the expense, so he was apparently unaware of these adapters.
