I am producing a high value syngas out of my gasifier. My intention is to segregate Hydrogen through PSA and CO and CO2 to be sent for CO2 sequestration and CO as a fuel for IGCC gas turbine. Steam turbine will be operated by steam I produce during cooling of syngas.
Can I use only CO as a fuel for gas turbine? Recovered Hydrogen i want to use for other purposes. Awaiting the response. CO is a flammable gas. For example, if I can use it then is there any drawback?
There are a number of projects known to use direct coal in pressurized fluidized beds that have been integrated as combustor in GT cycles. So I think it should be principally possible to find a GT to be operated with CO. The problem with coal GT was not the CO but the ash. If the syngas is ashfree it should work principally. The other question is the optimization of your cycle because you will not get tailored gas turbines so you can only choose between different GT types as available on the market. Possibly you can't use all your hydrogen for other purposes because the economic optimum indicates to buy a larger type of GT. So it is very probable that you have do decide on cost scenarios based on assumptions on future H2 and electricity prices.
Let me add:
CO2 is just a balast gas and can reduce the needed excess air for cooling of the GT combustor, just to answer your question completely. The other point is that you should discuss this item with GT deliverers because they can easily give you the real performance data of their GTs with different fuels including ballast gas. Because the CO2 might be a problem for ignition and combustion, dependeing on concentration it is also important to contact them.
Keep in mind that CO needs a certain amount of H2O for good combustion and ignition. Check if the humidity in the combustion air is sufficient for your purposes. Also, CO2 will severely reduce flame temperatures due to the high specific heat capacities. This can be compensated be reduced air excess ratios though.
Thank you Gentlemen. As I mentioned, I will segregate CO2, CO and Hydrogen through Pressure swing adsorption, hydrogen is sold to our client and CO2 is sent for Carbon capture and sequestration. I have a problem with CO. Usual GTs are operated on syngas (H2+CO+CO2) as a fuel. I am having a little change in my design and gonna operate GT with pure CO. Mr. Leicher just said I can't do it with CO alone. It should be mixed with moisture (or Hydrogen)) I believe. Now what is the minimum Hydrogen to CO ratio I can use to operate GT efficiently.
I am doing this because Hydrogen is valuable to me for other causes. My plan is to use the electricity generate by IGCC further into electrolysis of water to produce Hydrogen and Oxygen. So I have maximum production of hydrogen (from gasifier and from elctrolyzer). What is your opinion about it?
Usually air humidity should be sufficient for CO combustion, but depending where you are, this may not be the case. I'd suggest contacting the GT supplier, they should be able to answer this.
Can I get a help in having a contact detail of GT company's engineer?
Dear Ion, I agree the CAPEX will tremendously increase and even OPEX if we need distilled water for electrolysis (which I have no information about). But price of Hydrogen can acommodate the fixed capex and opex.
Another argument is, I am skipping water gas shift process unit thus saving capex and opex from there. The products of WGS is hydrogen and CO2 and CO2 is of no that value which Oxygen will give me from electrolyzer. Again, this is just my rough assumption
