Thank you, Malcolm. But, I haven't heard a word about this in any other news media outlet. Nothing on CNN. I wrote to The Economist and asked them about it, but they did not answer me.
There is no evidence yet that cetyl pyridinium chloride kills Covid-19 in 30 secs. It has been said that it can lower the transmission rate, and it does not necessarily mean that cetyl pyridinium chloride present in mouthwash can protect one from getting infected.
Please refer to the following links for more information.
The liars, conspiracists, and pandemic denialists are mixing all the denialist concepts of the past into one super conspiracy theory, where viruses do NOT exist, it is all a "new world order" ploy to eliminate the elderly and change the economy, and according to them, this is all being done with: (1) mutagenic vaccines, (2) microchip vaccines, (3) 5G technology, (4) electromagnetic radiation, (5) chemtrails, and why not (6) because the earth is actually flat, to control our minds and let us as "ignorant sheeple".
All this science fiction movie is the perfect dressing to say that bleach and chlorine dioxide is THE SALVATION.
Please, let's be better than all these morons. We need to establish a cordon sanitaire against this genocidal ideology.
Dear Anthony St. John thank you for your interesting technical question. As a chemist I would say first of all that chloride salts in general will not eliminate the coronavirus. I'm pretty sure that normal table salt (sodium chloride) will have no effect on the virus. However, as has already been mentioned by other RG members who answered your question, CPC (= cetylpyridinium chloride) is a proven antiseptic which is present in many mouthwashes. This special chloride has indeed been reported to kill the coronavirus in ca. 30 seconds. Please have a look at the following recent link:
CPC-containing mouthwash can inactivate the coronavirus in 30 seconds
No sufficient literature exists to prove this fact. Though at times sodium hypochlorite (bleach) is being used in aqueous solutions for sanitization. As known bleach releases chlorine gas, and the role of chlorine in removing Covid19 contamination may be attested in that way.
