In recent years, bulk cubic BrA has emerged as a promising material for producing power devices due to its excellent electronic properties and high thermal conductivity. However, despite conducting thorough research, I was unable to find sufficient information on the commercial or research-based synthesis of this semiconductor. I'm mainly interested in obtaining centimeter-scale substrates for the fabrication of THz photoconductive devices, and I am curious if these substrates are available commercially or through collaborative efforts.
Boron arsenide (BrAs) is a promising material for high power and high-frequency electronics due to its high thermal conductivity and large bandgap. However, growing BrAs substrates with a large surface area in the centimeter scale is challenging due to its high melting point, low vapor pressure, and low solubility in solvents.
Currently, the most common method for growing BrAs substrates is by the chemical vapor transport (CVT) technique. This involves the reaction of gaseous precursors of boron and arsenic in a closed chamber, where BrAs crystals are grown on a seed crystal at high temperatures and low pressures. However, the CVT method is limited in terms of the size and shape of the resulting crystals, and it is difficult to obtain large BrAs substrates with a centimeter-scale surface area using this method.
Another approach for growing BrAs substrates with a large surface area is by the liquid encapsulated vertical Bridgman (LEVB) method. This involves growing the crystal from a melt in a crucible, where the temperature gradient is controlled to ensure the formation of a single crystal. The LEVB method has been shown to be effective for growing BrAs crystals with a larger surface area than the CVT method. However, it is still challenging to obtain BrAs substrates with a centimeter-scale surface area using this method.
Overall, while it is possible to grow BrAs substrates with a large surface area, it remains a challenging task due to the material properties of BrAs. Further research and development are needed to improve the crystal growth techniques for BrAs and to overcome the challenges associated with obtaining large substrates with a centimeter-scale surface area.
