This question might be a stupid one but I had some argument on it. What I understand is that bacteria can not grow in 10% SDS solution. We generally use SDS to lyse them. Am I right? Some people from my University are claiming that Bacteria or fungus can grow in 10% SDS. Can you guys help me in this regard?
SDS is used in high amounts as a detergent in products such as shampoos, car wash soap and toothpaste. Therefore, its bioremediation by suitable microorganisms is important. I advise you to read the following interesting paper:

Hi Abir,
Pseudomonas aeruginosa can degrade SDS;
P. aeruginosa is capable to reduce SDS with the enzyme Alkylsulfatase
which is applicable for Bioremediation purpose.
SDS-degrading bacteria (some strains of):
Pseudomonas putida
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Klebsiella oxytoca

Also few streptomycetes can degrade SDS and some fungi. They are exceptional but in general not
As Martin Klvana mentioned you can get growth at 1% SDS (10g/L), but 10%? Not likely.
Did they actually isolate bacteria or do they simply see turbidity (could easily be SDS precipitation)?
