I work for a company that fabricates a precursor of tape casted ceramics on a carrier film. and I have been searching for different options as well, however our process currently measures permeability as well as area density. The first is measured by removing a sample from the carrier film and placing it in a gas flow meter, where basically a gas is passed through the material and the flow of inlet versus the flow of outlet gas is compared. If the material dose not have a high permeability it is supposed that the packing density is high. The second measure is taking a foot of material and measure the mass (also without film) and measure the thickness to obtain the volume. however if the density is higher vs a different sample this dose not necessarily mean that the packing density is higher it could mean that the thickness is higher.
One way i have attempted is to take a sample of the green ceramic tape and view under SEM both air side and film side and observe the porosity of the sample.
