I dispersed 0.5 gms of MgO in a litre of DI water and sonicated it for 3 hours and found that, it did not disperse well. After keeping it idle for a day, found that it got agglomerated.
I did the same procedure for CuO in DI water. Got dispersed partially, but settled after 8 hrs.
Can anyone please suggest the optimized volume or weight fraction and surfactants and/or dispersants to have stable Mgo and CuO based nanofluids with DI water as base fluid?
Have you tried to shift the pH? Magnesia has a very high IEP, if you make your medium acidic, the nanoparticles must become stable. I actually think they should be stable at neutral pH too, you problem with agglomeration is most probably coming from the low intensity of sonication. Sonicating one liter of a liquid - no chance. If at all, you need an ultrasonic sonicator with a tip and treat a very small volume of the dispersion. You can mix all your magnesia in a few ml of water and sonicate it in a pulse mode overnight. If you don't have a suitable ultrasonic finger, I would try ball milling. Generally, it can be recommended to never let nanoparticles dry out after the synthesis, exchange the dispersion medium in the liquid state. Dry nanopowders can be quite difficult to work with.

Dear Prof. Roman Kubrin, I find that shifting pH might make it acidic and later ends ups unfeasible for flow thorugh pipes, due to corrosive results. The only option left with me is dispersants and surfactants.
