Eric Hoyle (date?) looks at the concept profession from three perspectives, namely: functionalist/systems, radical/critical, and phenomenolocal. Check his works which were written in the early 1990s. These works address both professionalisation and professional development, as well as the paradox inherent in these processes. Another source that you will find interesting is that of Kesson and Henderson (2010) who talks about standardised management, constructivist, and transformation paradigms of professional development.
