I understand that most dendrochirotid sea cucumbers have direc development or a very short-lived larval life. can then the distribution of such species be directly dependent on ocean currents?
Hi! I'm not a marine biologist, however, as biogeographer (mostly terrestrial...) , my opinion is as follows. IF, and just if, the Dendrochirotid species you are investigating do not have relevant non-benthonic life phases, all living steps included, so ocean currents in principle don't play an essential role in their diffusion.
Thanks Chantal for useful references. I will check them out.Mario your contribution is along the line I am contemplating. However, I'd like some opinions from marine biologists as I believe that water temperatures will play a significant role in dispersion of very mobile species and perhaps to some extent even in sluggish dendrochirotid sea cucumbers.
