My background is in Energy Economics and Political Science and I would like to improve my knowledge on the Energy Transition issues.
In your opinion, what are the most relevant and comprehensive articles written in the last years that address policy, economic, technical, or multidisciplinary aspects of energy transitions?
Also, with the exception of the Sussex Energy Group of SPRU (University of Sussex), what in your opinion are the universities and think tanks at the forefront of research on the transition to a low carbon economy?

I suggest that you examine the case of Germany (The German Energiewende) which can be considered a very ambitious and relatively successful initiative. You can access a large number of scientific and governmental publications on this topic. It can also be a good case study for other countries to emulate.
Based on my learning experience and given the research topic that you're interested in , I'd recommend the universities I graduated from:
1) Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in Cambridge, MA, USA
2) Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA
3) Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA

Thank you for your answer. Yes, the Germany's Energiewende is a very interesting and complex case to analyse. However, I have recently came across this worrisome article about the German’s energy transition https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2018-germany-emissions/ which argues that Germany “is likely to fall short of its goals for reducing harmful carbon-dioxide emissions even after spending over 500 billion euros ($580 billion) by 2025 to overhaul its energy system.”
You may also consider looking into analyses of the shift toward natural gas for electricity generation in the US. There is significant literature discussing the causes and effects of that transition.

Let me start with the regular outlook and/or scenario providers: International Energy Agency produces World Energy Outlook every year with multiple scenarios. Energy Information Administration does something similar every year for the U.S. and every other year for the world. ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, Bloomberg New Energy Finance, IRENA (already mentioned), etc. California has aggressive transition policies: recent studies by Energy and Environmental Economics could be useful.
But, one needs to approach all such modeling carefully and compare assumptions from various groups. Of the above, IEA and EIA are probably most unbiased but still imperfect. Following might be useful in developing a critical perspective:
MIT has a series of reports, all titled Future of ____ (solar, wind, coal, etc)
UT-Austin Energy Institute: Full Cost of Electricity (completed) and Energy Infrastructure of the Future (ongoing) - I have been involved in both.
Since it was mentioned, Energywiende is probably less successful than many think. You already referenced the Bloomberg coverage. Dieter Helm from Oxford has written about its shortcomings among others.
