If you review the literature on the analysis of fulvic or humic acids by LC-MS you will find many papers using low or ultrahigh MS resolution and showing spectra in positive or negative mode. However, a close examination of the analytical conditions used for LC separation and MS detection are usually missing. That making it difficult to reproduce the analysis. Moreover, molecular weight for fulvic and humic acids are generally in the range of 1000-5000 Da, but often closer to 1500 Da for fulvic and 2500-3000 Da for humic. If you look LC-MS results for fulvic or humic compounds, you will observe that higher masses are often missing. These high masses should be more characteristic of these compounds. So, it is very difficult to obtain reproducible analysis of FU or HU by LC-MS. If you develop a reproducible method for LC-MS analysis of FU or HU, please give a lot of data in the Material and Method section of the journal where you will publish your method. I will be happy to use your analytical conditions. From my experience, LC-MS analysis of humic compounds is not very sensistive.
