I am working on 0.1 wt% c steel. I need to obtain average grain size of 100 micrometer for some experimental purpose. Initial grain-size is 10 micrometer. I am able to achieve average grain-size of 40 micrometer after multiple trials of conventional rolling (30% cold-rolled) followed by an annealing treatment (hold at 700 degree centigrade for 30 Hrs). I am not able to go beyond 40 micrometer grain-size due to presence of pearlite. Please suggest some solution.
Take it to complete austenizing temperature (say ~900 C, refer to iron-carbon phase diagram for a better temperature decision) and soak at that temperature for 1 h per inch thickness of the specimens or more time. You will see significant growth of austenite grain size. Furnace cooling will result in larger ferrite and pearlite grains. At 900 C you may also oxidize the specimen surface significantly and decarburize the surface. Therefore, care is needed to avoid unwanted surface degradation by providing nitrogen cover during 900 C soaking or packing in sand etc.

To enlarge significantly austenitic grains, that presumably results in coarsening of TRANSFORMED structure, 900 C may be not enough (rather slow grain growth). Better apply T>= 1050 C.
