your question id depends on your purpose ...grounded or phenomenology ...your title is not clear
Interesting question: on inital consideration, It would be prudent to use an instrument to at least detect stereotyping in your subjects: ageism, racism(in any definition) genderism etc simply to qualify the response you are given... and possibly to allow greater followups using NVivo etc tools. While my comment is a standard one, I am noted substantial ageism in recent years, especially amongst mid aged managers, so it would be worth ensuring that the attitudes need some testing-however lightly and indirectly- to avoid systematic perception bias.probably an inventory of the characteristics of the workforce for which the manager is responsible is already part of your background data collection?if so some sort of concordance or otherwise between qualifications (a poor tool i know) and some factor of perceived prodcutivity or level might help a bit.. but its a hard question and this is just a first limited response: however it might possibly spark a better idea or two perhaps!
