I am planning to record experimental data in a reasonably quiet, but not sound-proof environment. Intensity analysis, especially spectral tilt, should be possible. I have read about the proximity effect that could be a problem. Is it better to use a dynamic or a condenser mic? Should it be unidirectional or omnidirectional?..
We use Countryman E6 Earset mics in both studio and field recordings. They are directional, which helps eliminate any background noise (and cross-talk in multi-speaker recordings). They have good frequency response, which is important for spectral tilt. This is not a cheap microphone, unfortunately. We spent around CAD600 per mic.

in my opinion this depends very much on much would like to spend for a microphone! You can already get a very good quality for less than 200 Euro (Shure WH20XLR). In our lab, we are very satisfied with this one: Beyerdynamic TG H74c. Keep in mind that it is - for most of our purposes - generally an advantage to use super/hyper-cardioid microhones as they avoid including environmental noise.
