From some papers, they use stiffeners and cross-linkers for rubber hardeners while some papers use the word hardener and cross-linkers (as they were the same meaning) for plastic such as epoxy resin. 

As far as I know, the hardeners focus on terminated functional group, however, the cross-linkers focus on the backbone. (I am not sure if I know the right concept or not). I would be very glad if someone answered the question. Thank you !! :D
