PROCEDURE

1. Exit MassLynx.

2. Switch the pump control switch to the right (override) position from the left (auto) position. This is the top toggle

switch above the breakers.

3. Switch the epc and aux breakers to the down position.

4. Switch the electronics breaker to the down position.

5. Wait a minute or two, and then reboot the host PC.

6. Once logged into the host PC, you can also power cycle ACQUITY before proceeding.

7. Switch the electronics breaker to the up position (the PC must be powered-on and logged in, and the ACQUITY

must be powered-on at this point).

8. Wait one minute.

9. Switch the epc and aux breakers to the up position.

10. Wait for the epc to boot (the flashing white/purple light on the Synapt G2/S/Si will stop flashing and will remain

solid white/purple).

11. Wait another minute.

12. Open the tune page in MassLynx.

13. Click View > Vacuum, and then go to the vacuum tab and ensure that you have real vacuum readings (not 1e-8 for the Tof vacuum). If not, reboot again.

14. Switch the pump control (toggle) switch to the left (auto) position from the right (override) position.

15. Put the MS into Operate mode.

First use Telnet to restart the EPC. All mass spectrometers have a reset button for the EPC, but if not done correctly, the

system may vent.

Resetting the EPC using Telnet:

1. Click Windows.

2. In the search bar, type "Telnet epc" and press Enter.

3. If Telnet is currently configured on your computer, the DOS prompt window launches.

4. The window should contain a ">", followed by a blinking cursor.

5. Type "reboot" in lowercase and press Enter.

I have a Synapt G1. I had the same problem. There are no manual for the EPC. If your EPC won't boot then it is very likely to be a mother board failure as my one was. There are many capacitors on the board and they eventually blow after 10-15 years or if there is some eletrical surge/fault in the power supply. Its possible to remove the EPC yourself but there is nothing that can really be done to fix electrical mother board circuit failures. The EPC is no longer replaceable from Waters as do not supply parts any longer for the G1. Some companies in do keep spare EPCs from old instruments but they are very rare for the G1. In the end my G1 has been scrapped. If you hear constant beep from the EPC when booting, then its and EPC failure. However, if it is just that you cannot connect to the control PC it might be communication issue in Masslynx or a Lan connection. If you take of the left side panels of the G1 you can access the EPC, carefully pull it partly out and plug in a VGA cable to the monitor port. When booting the EPC you should see a series of "++++++..++++" if it running. That might mean you it a MassLyx connection issue, worth checking. If so a common fault is the LAN connectin on the side panel of the Syanpt fails. So try bypassing it and plugging the LAN cable direct from the contrl MassLynx PC into the EPC. Problems can also occur if the EPC BIOS battery goes flat and you have turned the Syanpt off, that will wipe the BIOS and that might effect communications from the internal solid state boot card. Thank you for the answer! Yes, our case was caused by losing BIOS settings, we restored them and now Synapt is running. But absence of the manual for EPC is looks strange for me. battery in EPC is not eternal, so why did they don't add any information in user manual or even their web-site? It looks like Waters don't even think about situation, when their instrument will be online after more than 5 years :-)
