I have a problem in desiging a stable dam and simultaneously fitting ogee spillway in the dam body with 0.7:1 steep, first the width of the dam is constrained with profile of ogee spillway and the stability doesn't match with the constrain. I would appreciate any guidance or idea.
I am not sure I completely follow your question but if I understand it you would need wing walls for your spillway to contain the dam fill or concrete
appreciate it. while we choose proper dimension for a dam to be stable we need to check if ogee spillway is fitted in dam body or not (in overflow dams). Therefore ogee profile is a constrain to find an optimum dimension for dam. The question is: Is that right? and If it's right how we can handle it? I tried optimization methods but I didn't get an appropriate answer.
The spillway and Dam should be considered to be separate structures
Please take a look at these two pages I've attached and tell me where I am wrong? these pages are from "Irrigation structures and hydraulic structures" by Kumar Garg. It mentioned that spillway must be fitted into dam body.
See the attached paper which includes a photo of a spillway (albeit not an ogee), a transitions structure, embankment and powerhouse. All are separate structures with water stopped vertical construction joints used to separate each of the structures. All must be stable in their own right.
Typically the stability assessments would be 2D. #D can also be used to take advantage of structure interaction in the analysis

My considered dam is an overflow gravity dam. so the dam has a spillway inside the body. the downstream steep of spillway must be 0.7:1, according to some rules and considerations. so If we have the spillway inside the dam the downstream steep of the dam also must be 0.7:1, the same as spillway. this constrain leads to instability of my dam.
Hi Hamed. Naturally depending on the layout of the dam some things one could consider to increase stability (sliding or overturing) without changing the downstream slope: have an inclined upstream slope, although not hat efficient; if the spillway is shorther/narrower than the crest lenth the spillway could be flanked by flatter sloped abutment sections to provide mass against overtuning; inclined base, as opposed to horizontal; installation of cable anchors.
