There are two possibilities.

1. you have a really small edge or object in your model. (in this case the error happens after a long time)

2. you defined the port or radiation boundary in a wrong way (if the error happens at the beginning)

The 4G Ram is too small to simulate those structures. There are some suggestions.

1. You can use parallel processing by adding the IP address of other computers that your group have.

2. You can manually assign the mesh in body model.

3. Or you can upgrade the memory of your computer.

Depends on the wavelength of operating frequency . Perhaps because you simulate thin layers with huge area the aspect ratio will be large and the meshing needs much memory .Try to define mesh manually first and check again or if you have symmetric planes define them to reduce time and memory of un necessary doubled calculation . Actually with new versions of the HFSS, having 4 G of memory is not enough for large design. You can increase virtual memory of your PC but the time will be long.

Well the same is the case with one of my fellow researcher, he was simulating the similar kind of structure in order to see the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) on the human muscle.

Try either reducing the mesh size and no. of passes, or upgrade the RAM of your PC.

New HFSS versions needs high memory for simulation.I too had face this problems during my non planar antenna design.But it can be resolved, some suggestions are:

-Reduce no. of Delta Passes

-Close all other applications during simulation.

-Check the design excitation port

With the same RAM, I would suggest you for your problem to use a software based on the FDTD method (because you need a wide band solution and you have several dielectric materials): CST or EMPIRE.

Are you sure you're running an FE-BI simulation and not a straight - up FEM? Also try reducing the FEM area around your antenna or model it as a 2.5D problem in Ansys Designer... it sounds like your stack-up will lend itself to it as a first-order approximation, and for small antennas on large bodies I believe it might be a pretty good approximation.

you can use symmetry if its possible. in hfss you can also reduce or increase meshing in some parts

for UBW, adapt between the middle and high ends of the band (smaller wavelength) and check your no pf passes and maximum delta in meshing.

Even I am facing a similar problem while trying to calculate SAR level on a six layered sphere equivalent of a human head, but unfortunately faced the same error "Out of memory'. I am using HFSS 16 (64bit) on a 64 bit system with 8 GB RAM. I have tried reducing the number of passes. I have also tried cleaning up and closing all previous simulations. But the error still persists. I want to know if RAM extension definitely solves the problem.

This error is usually caused by misconfigured system files.

So, from my experience, if you received a System Error 109 Hfss message then there is a 95% chance that your computer has registry problems.

In case you find the Error: "out of ram", you may, i) Reduce the no of passes, ii) Increase the step size.

This method may not be the best solution but definitely can reduce the ram requirement to some extent.

Run this design on workstation, you will get output.

With my limited knowledge on HFSS, I would like to suggest few steps which can solve this problem.

1. Out of RAM issue can be solved if we somehow reduce the number of tetrahedron. If you reduce the size of radiation box (if possible), a large number of tetrahedron can be reduced.

2. If 3D geometry is used to draw the ground plane, make it a 2D object, instead of 3D. It will also reduce the number of tetrahedron

3. Repeat this process to other object if possible (i.e. convert 3D to 2D, if possible)

4. Open task manager and delete unnecessary process. Windows XP and windows 7 can run with 24 and 49 (45 to 54 avg) number of process respectively. Try to obtain this number first, then open your HFSS and run the simulation.

5. If the problem is still not solve, try to use lower version of HFSS and draw your geometry therein and apply steps 1 to 4.

High performance machine at least 16 GB, RAM is required to simulate any design in the vicinity of human body equivalent model.
