P2P is always tricky as SSL and other technologies might prove to be not fit for the task. May I offer you to have a look at "Trust in Peer-to-Peer content distribution protocols" by Kuntze, Rudolph and Fuchs as well as "Reliable Identities using off-the-shelf hardware security in MANETs" by Kuntze and Rudolph. I have also some more publications on the MANET topic and also BitTorrent extension. Let me know if that is a direction fit for you.
the choice you gonna do, will depend on several criteria:
- Authentication is required between nodes or not?
- Your P2P is synchronous or asynchronous
- Computational capacity of nodes,
- Real-time aspects exist or is not important
etc ...
clearly defining what it takes, the choice becomes easier

the question here is what's your aim. There are various ideas on P2P networks out there with very different purposes. What kind of P2P network do you address? Is it more in the direction of BitTorrent (content distribution) or BATMAN (ad-hoc networks)? Do you have control, owner or are even the administrator of the devices used? To answer your question it would be good to know more of your use case first.
