I have conducted fracture toughness evaluation tests on 316 stainless steel (SS) and weld by estimating δQ values based on ASTM E1820. The results showed that 316 SS weld had a lower fracture toughness value than that of base metal, indicating the resistance to crack growth is lower. I also conducted fatigue crack growth tests on the same materials based on ASTM E647. However, the 316 weld had a lower fatigue crack growth rate than that of base metal, indicating the resistance to crack is higher, which is consistent with many references.  It seems that there is inconsistency between the fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth rates according to our results. Shouldn't a lower fracture toughness of weld lead to a higher fatigue crack growth rate and a lower fatigue crack resistance? What's the relationship between fracture toughness and fatigue crack resistance?
