Our study is investigating clinical knowledge in a specific area in healthcare workers at a large metropolitan hospital. Participants will self-select to complete the survey via email invitation with an invited participant pool of approximately 3000. I am interested in any information about calculating and appropriate sample size, or in fact if it is not possible to do this in a self-selecting sample.
Sample size determination has many approaches it depends on the method that suits your research. I have done a paper using Morgan and Krejc method before you can check under my pobilication

I will look into that now. I have lots of information on calculating sample size for random selection, but not self-selecting sample, and cannot find much that is clear on this.
