I've just submitted my thesis on the embryonic genome activation in non-model species and I've read most of the literature available on this topic. Unfortunately, there is very little on the EGA/ZGA in the horse. The primary reference cited is Brinsko et al. and the 'next best' is "Grøndahl, C., & Hyttel, P. (1996). Nucleologenesis and ribonucleic acid synthesis in preimplantation equine embryos. Biology of reproduction, 55(4), 769-774." Both of these state the EGA occurs at the 6-cell stage. Sorry I can't help you further with this; as far as I know, this area of the field still needs to be investigated.
