For a country so densely populated, it was a matter of time before India came to the top of the chart. Additionally, as mentoned above, stringent lockdown measures should have been adopted.
COVID-19 cases in India is only increasing in densely populated cities/regions where it is not possible to maintain spatial distancing. Despite of rising cases of COVID-19 in India the mortality rate is low.
There are several reasons for a surge in the number of Covid cases in India, as far as I try to understand it.
1. Relaxations in the lockdown and social distancing policies has been one of the major reasons. This increased the mobility of people within and across states.
2. Even though lockdown and social distancing norms are still followed in many states including the cities, people don't consider it seriously, which caused an increase in the numbers.
3. Testing facilities are inadequate, given the increasing numbers of positive cases.
4. There are several instances of even thousands of cases now, in which, the reasons for Covid spread is yet unknown, despite lockdown and social distancing are followed in several states and cities (see the news attached).
5. Wearing masks is not strictly followed in large number of places, especially, rural areas.
6. The influx of immigrants from Middle East (Arab Gulf) countries and other countries has been identified as another reasons, where most immigrants are tested positive at the entry points. Most of these immigrants have been home quarantined with the condition that they stay at home and don't move out. This has been violated in most cases.
7. Deaths due to fear factor (psychological) is widely also reported, in which, the people tested positive and under treatment succumb to death by cardiac arrests, committing suicides, etc.
Bringing back migrant labourers is largely responsible for spike in positive cases in many states.
With the first unlocK, opening of public transportation like trains, buses , metros etc contribute a lot to increased cases
Third and most important factor responsible for continuing growth in positve cases is people themselves are not strictly following guidelines, still gathering in groups in public places zeopardising lives of many people.
Lockdown upliftment. Many cases not yet detected. If mandatory test for all is done it could be possible to identify and treat All but it is costly and require more medical infrastructure.
A combination of factors: dense population, non-compliance to hygiene and lockdown rule, difficulty in social distancing. Am not in India but I believe it is the same reason Beijing and South Korea have had a second coronavirus wave.
About 70-80% of the city’s active cases are asymptomatic and a number of patients are left undetected because of various reasons like less availability of testing facilities and hiding travel history. These asymptomatic cases and undetected cases spread the disease in the community.
More people(Indians) are coming from other countries and in those countries, COVID is in peak and they bring along with them the disease. The number of tests is also on the increase and this makes the count go high. Since Indiancomparison population is high comparisaon with other countries are lot logical
Dr. P K Viswanathan I agree with your answer that various factors are responsible and yes after lockdown maximum persons think that now everything is right now. Thank you for your answer
Dr. Bodh R Sharma, I agree with you about the medical facility in India and we should focus on it. India's rank is 145 out of 195 countries. Thank you.
Yes. I agree dense population, non-compliance to hygiene and lockdown rule, difficulty in social distancing are major factors but few other factors may be responsible. Without any proper treatment of COVOD-19 disease, we will see many waves of disease.
Researchers publish their work on the basis of available data but we are going to change its meaning. Available literature suggested that Asia persons are having more resistance against COVID-19 diseases. Yes, type of strains and Immunity is also major factors. But after lockdown, many persons are not following the rules and guidelines as they are saying we have enough immunity. Thank you
Thank you for your answer, I agree with you, in India, maximum active cases are asymptomatic and undetected cases, no proper availability of testing kits, hiding information by persons.
I agree. Yes, Maximum people are not worried. SARS-COV-2 is a deadly pathogenic RNA virus and at present, we don't have any medicine or vaccine. But we are not worried… Thank you
I think the poor management of the migrant workers during the lockdown may be one of the reasons that contributed to spread COVID-19 within the community.
MILITARY BUDGETS suck away all... of the funds needed for the people's health and REAL National Security, like adequate housing, clean water, a sanitary place to take a poop, free solar panels for electricity, etc.
Compare the top Covid infected countries with the highest military budgets--
#1 USA - 2.5 million cases and the Military Budget is world's #1 $732 BILLION.
#2 Brazil - 1.3 million cases and the Military Budget is #11 $27 Billion.
#3 Russia - 620,000 cases and Military Budget is #4 at $65 billion.
#4 India - 509,000 cases and Military Budget is #3 at $71 billion.
#5 UK - 309,000 cases and Military Budget is #8 at $49 billion, etc.
By eliminating each country's military, those budgets could be redirected for REAL National Security...like heath care and the like--otherwise, what use is the military for National Security, if you do not take care of the physical needs of everyone in your country first?
Why did we invented governments at all? ... It was to provide the basics for all of us--like free education, clean water systems, repaired roads, sanitary sewer or composting toilet system, zero homelessness, start converting the power grid from fossil fuels to solar, finally resolve ALL disputed territorial boundaries, sign peace treaties and end all conflicts with the neighbors, etc.
However, the companies making their money supplying weapons, WANT and NEED the conflicts with the neighbors and other religions, to continue for eternity... or they must close their businesses and start other work? '
Plus, the politicians have allowed the military for the last 100 years or so... worldwide, to hog those funds, so that millions of people in each country are made unnecessarily to suffer?
We all must try and follow the example... that was pioneered 2,200 years ago in India by Ashoka the Great, Emperor of the Mauryan Empire, who showed us that we could live peacefully without war and the threat of wars?
H.G. Wells wrote in 1920... "Amidst the tens of thousands of names of monarchs that crowd the columns of history, their majesties and graciousnesses and serenities and royal highnesses and the like, the name of Ashoka shines, and shines, almost alone, a star."
The people's basic needs MUST be put first... and it is the duty of each of us to tell our politicians what we want and need! Otherwise, the Covid could overwhelm us, and destroy our societies and our economies, in less than a year.
Migration of labour, initially low testing, high population density in metro cities and lack of proper sanitization, difficult to maintain physical distancing and all time busy with politics are main things behind the increasing cases.
India is the largest democracy in the world, with a population of 1.35 billion people, and 900 million potential voters...
So, what if a large number of people asked their Lok Sabha representatives to defund the military, and use those funds for the health care and welfare of the people?
If India signed peace treaties with all of its neighbors, and at the same time, resolved all of the territorial disputes with its neighbors...there would be ZERO NEED to even have a military? Whomever is receiving all that money now is not going to like that, but tough. We immediately need those $71 billion (about 5.4 arab rupees) so they can be used to fund the more important internal National Security issues?
It was due to unplanned sudden lockdown and then in the mid of lockdown labours were allowed to migrate their home town through rails, buses and other travel modes. The infection start reaching villages. There is no comprehensive plan for covid prevention and management.
Lockdown is a situation in which people are not allowed to enter or leave a building or area freely because of an emergency.
In India, on 24 March 2020, the total numbers of COVID-19 cases are only 51. We failed to achieve our goal in lockdown but this lockdown gave us more time to arrange medical facility as well as develop medical the system.
And further, the use of transportation for movement of labours is another factor.
Peter Navarro, financial advisor to Trump interviewed on NPR News Hour - July 9 – Said that China spawned the virus, then sent infected people to travel on aircraft, to spread it?
“The reason why we have so many [Covid-19] cases, and China has less, is this. Not only did China spawn the virus in November. They hid it about two months. During that time, China restricted travel within China to contain the virus, but they sent thousands of Chinese nationals on aircraft, which many of them were infected, then spread the seed of that virus. So, that's part of the problem we're facing now.”
WHAAATTTTT?????? Instead, could the real issue be--If you want nothing done right, Donald J. Trump is the best man for the task, and, there was no one equal to him?

Researchers found that those who took PPIs up to once a day were twice as likely... to have had a positive COVID-19 test result than those who did not take the drugs. Those who took PPIs twice a day were almost four times as likely to have tested positive for the disease.
PPIs are powerful acid-lowering drugs... And Brennan Spiegel, MD, MSHS, professor of medicine and public health at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, theorized that an increase in stomach pH above 3 as a result of use of PPIs might allow the virus to enter the GI tract more easily, leading to enteritis, colitis, and systemic spread to other organs, including the lungs. "There is a reason we have acid in our stomachs," Spiegel said.
By contrast, those taking H2RA drugs once daily... were 15% less likely to report a positive COVID-19 test result. Research is currently underway to determine whether H2RAs (histamine-2 receptor agonists, also known as H2 blockers, which are used to treat some of the same conditions as PPIs but that do not reduce stomach acid as much) might protect against the disease for reasons unrelated to pH balance.

OBIT Blames Politicians for Covid Death...NPR's Michel Martin speaks with Kristin Urquiza, whose father died due to COVID-19, about the obituary she wrote for him, which is a scathing indictment of politician's failures to control the virus. Folks, along with going over the COVID-cliff here in the USA before the end of the year... we are on the brink of a domino-economic-effect of another "Great Recession" that will make the last one a decade ago, look like the appetizer for a seven course meal?
The US banks are already bracing themselves... for that economic tidal wave approaching right now, by stashing away billions of dollars to cover defaulting loans and mortgages, that people without jobs have no ability to pay back?
Our leaders in the USA, Mexico, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia, etc.... did not do a rapid-enough Covid response like New Zealand and China, and unfortunately until they do, we will all suffer the health and economic consequences?
Our "leaders" have torpedoed our economies and our people... by not providing any leadership so far. The consequence of that lack of fast action may be, that those countries will probably need to break up to save themselves? So India for example, could break up into a dozen new countries, similar to what existed before the British took over?
