I need to study bee thermoregulation both in laboratory and in the field. Principally I want to analyse the temperature of single bees in an experimental arena. Is the camera FLIR E60bx suitable for this kind of research? I think that its quality/price ratio is satisfactory.

We had ever used a such camera, brand of it is FLIR. We used it to record reptilia behavior thermoregulation and activie body temperatures. I think you can search the FLIR REPORTER for more information. I am sorry I just have the Chinese reporter here.Hope it could help a bit.

The E60 is a low standard cheap camera so if thats all you can afford that will have to be it. This sort of camera is more for workers in electronics, power plants, manufacturing. For small fast moving objects you will have to have the best resolution you can afford, you might want to also think about the correct lens for your needs (focal range etc) and it might be worth your while to invest in thermal video capability and the appropriate software (e.g FLIR researchIR) so that you can really get the most out of your research. If you are looking at hives only and not individuals the above is slightly less important. However, always spend your money on resolution. Nate Fuller of Boston University thermal images bats, liek him, with bees you might also want to use computer vision analysis to analyse the images for the colony as a whole population. We use an SC620 on domestic, agricultural and zoo animals in all manner of situations. It was expensive but produces the most amazing videos and images and means we get really valuable and accurate data. As with all thermal imaging its the practicalities and techniques you have to consider. Make sure you are rigourous in your protocol, monitor all environmental conditions and have as little contamination from other IR sources as possible (e.g you! or other heat reflections). Id recommend actually contacting FLIR or similar to get advice on the most suitbale camera for your needs. watch these links for video of dolphins and bats
