I'm in the process of writing a thesis looking at the construction of infertile selves through talk in doctor-patient encounters, looking at the ways infertile couples create, transform and resist culturally available discourses in the process of constructing their various identities. Has anyone come across a similar topic or piece of research, or could suggest a framework for analysis that would take into account the different variables my topic suggests?
Take a look ay "cultural discourse analysis" by Carbaugh. Its a development in the ethnography of communication tradition and is meant to deal with exactly the kind of phenomenon you're looking at.
A good piece that lays out the framework is in journal of intercultural communication research, vol 36 no 3. 2007 pp. 167-182. It's called Cultural Discourse Analysis: Communication Practices and Intercultural Encounters. Check the reference list for a variety of works that apply it in the kind of ways yyou're discussing here. If you can't get access to it let me know, I'll be happy to get you a copy.
Thank you so much for the insight and recommendations Brion. I have managed to get a copy of the article you mentioned by Carbaugh, which seems to be the missing link I have been looking for. I have been considering Mary Bucholtz and Kira Hall's framework for identity analysis in interaction, but it has left me quite lost because of its broad spectrum of theoretical groundings. I'll see if I can do some kind of a merger between the two.

I would check my colleague Shelley Reuter at Concordia University (Montreal). She has written excellent work on doctor patient interactions and more recently has done research on issues of reproduction.

Bucholtz & Hall 2004, 2005 offer a very detailed (and quite complicateed) model --as yet mostly unfollowed, but I belive promising.

Fatima, I think, at least according to the way you have raised your question and hence develop the topic, the kind of framework you are looking for is hardly available. I am saying this, as you know, most of strong theories dealing with identity, I mean the post-structuralist and postmodernist ones, believe that identity formation is mainly effected by the dominant discourse. And in this way, they keep less leeway for subject for constructing its identity. However, I would like to suggest you to read Mari Ruti's works, particularly Reinventing the Soul, in which she proposes a new reading of post
-structuralism.

Have you checked Ken Hyland's 'Metadiscourse' (2005) and 'Disciplinary identities: individuality and community in academic discourse' (2012)? These books discuss academic discourse but they definitely give ideas about a framework for investigation of identities in doctor-patient communication. Power is a shared issue in both genres.
"Identity in Interaction" - there is a general framework from Conversation Analysis in
Antaki, C., & Widdicombe, S. (Eds.). (1998). Identities in talk. Los Angeles/London: Sage Publications.
And, as far as I know, there is a "Journal of Identity"

While all of the above recommendations seem relevant, I wouldn't leave aside Ervin Goffman's methodological/theoretical framework for spoken interaction analysis, as in, but not limited to:

Have a look in the journal of discourse & society. Also Margaret Wetherell's edited collection on identities research as part of her work at The Open University (uk). I would also reiterate Michael's recommended reading.

Positioning theory has been widely used as a theoretical framework to research the discursive construction of identity in social interactions - see, for example Harré & Slocum, Harré & Moghaddam
Srikant Sarangi has published extensively on genetics interviews, a lot of which focuses on constructions of identity, using various sociolinguistic frameworks
Karen Donolly, a PhD student at the Department of Linguistics at Lancaster University, is working on the discursive construction of infertility on online fora for parents.
I think you could read my work on a new model for the human psyche because I there expose a situation of shared ego that could become a fundamental tool for your research.
