“The Intenational Tables for Crystallography vol A” specifies an “Asymmetric Unit” for each group. It is is a polyhedron that produces a tiling of space by applications of the elements of the group. The “general” Wyckoff position is any point in the interior of the unit. “Special” Wyckoff positions are points on those faces that are mirror planes, points on edges that are rotation axes, and inversion centers and vertices of the Unit where rotation axes intersect. I’m attaching an article that illustrates the Units diagramatically. Studying them with that in mind will, I hope, clarify.
