I think it depends on what particles you're working on and organisms. Generally speaking, try to use the microdilution method to determine MIC!

I m working on Salmonella typhi & ETEC.
Yes i m following CLSI Guidelines and determining MIC & MBC using agar dilution method but by using those procedure it create a problem in handling a large number plates.
The redox dye resazurin was used to determine the MIC of nanoparticle. Find the below link.

Agar diffusion methods are best used for antimicrobial activity testing. Once the antimicrobial activity is established you should shift to broth dilution or 96-well plates to determine MIC. You can choose any of above mentioned articles, All are well explained.
