Manufacturing quality products will reduce the waste and garbage. I want to explore this area for my research in computer stream e.g. using computing techniques like opinion mining and or knowledge base.
Karin, hi. Hm. Usually before starting to conceive and to produce a product, its quality parameters are defined in terms of "does it correspond to some needed function". Of course engineers try to build a good non "waste and garbage" process... So in fact you study the quality of the process of production.
If one wants to check is the process quality, opinion mining could help. But how it could opinion be related with waste and garbage... Perhaps the opinion should be taken by people that manage garbage? Or those that live in the closed environment...
I don't imagine well the situation.
There are several methods that use texts from user assessments. So you have to define who is the user of the process that gives west and garbage.
I saw a conference paper from the linked PhD thesis some time ago. It is a little what you're looking into, but not exactly. They are mapping opinions into general ideas about quality related to a product. Not build quality, but user satisfaction quality. I have not seen anyone mining build quality or durability from opinions.
About the first part of your question, I think it can definitely be done. We all look for this kind of information in user comments when comparing two products.
Of course! The percentage of satisfaction (positive opinions) for a product indicates the quality of that product. There are many research works. Search for papers of Bing Liu.
I think Kiran has to be careful in mixing build quality with general satisfaction towards a product. Price could be an example of a general satisfaction predictor, which (usually) works against build quality. Especially if her goal is to minimize waste/"use and throw" mentality.
Several researchers have worked on opinion mining. These include some works by Hu, Liu, and others. You can get large dataset of reviews of such products that you want to evaluate the quality. Then finding the best way to mine those reviews requires study too. But I feel reading some of these works on opinion mining and sentiment classification will be of help to you.
