While doing SEM for my model I tried second-order path analysis. while running the first analysis, I got CFI =0.901 and GFI 0.913 and while enhancing the model with the help of MI, I found that a factor- Amotivation is loading on two second-order factors (motivation and Environmental Influences). Is it possible? When I tried that CFI increase to 0.918 and GFI to 0.928.
@Anitha You need to mention what software are you using for your analysis and also attach a screenshot of your model. As far as second order CFA is concerned, a first order latent factor doesn't automatically load to a second order latent factor rather we have to draw a path from second order to first order latent factor with which we look to make it converge.

My recommendation would be not to add any parameters / cross-loadings purely on the basis of modification indices (MIs). MIs are purely data-driven (atheoretical) and can be very misleading. They may point to additional parameters that are completely meaningless. I personally use MIs only to get a better sense for which variables / parameters may be involved most in the overall model misfit / misspecification. What does your theory say about the relationship between the variables / factors?
Also, your CFI is still rather low even for the modified model. I suspect there must be substantial overall model misfit. It would be good to see the overall model and the chi-square and df, which I consider to be a more informative measure of (mis)fit.
This could usually occur when a latent factor is missing a constraint.

Thank you all for your valuable responses. I am doing the analysis in AMOS. Yes Imran Anwar sir, U r right, according to my basic classification I have designed Amotivation as a subscale of motivation (second-degree factor). And the CFI is increasing when path is drawn from other Second- degree factor i.e Environmental Influence.
