I did immunohistochemical staining with Calretinin (D29k) and got a lot of relatively large cells stained, mostly in the hillus of the hippocampus. My aim at the begining was to label GABAergic interneurons but after a lot of literature review, I found different authors saying different things about the identity and characteristics of Calretinin-positive cells in the hippocampus.

I doubt whether they are newborn neurons because only very few (and smaller ones) were found lying along the subgranular zone where I expect newborn neurons to be found. However, another paper said those calretinin cells of the hillus do not produce GABA. Again, some other reports said these cells are mssy cells.

Can someone, enlighten me on the identity of these hillar, calretinin cells? Any help will be appreciated.
