Title: World Englishes and Language Assessment

The diversification of the varieties of English opens a debate in the field of linguistics and raises crucial questions about the status of English in its varieties. As the development of these varieties is increasing, teachers need to investigate ways of assessing multilingual English and the issues that can occur in the process of assessment. In this context, world Englishes has started to receive much attention by teachers, researchers in the field; as a result, there has been an increase in the organization of conferences, study days and the creation of associations related to world Englishes or English as a lingua franca.

Despite the development of this field of research, literature shows that there are areas of world Englishes that remain unexplored. Literature in this field admits that research on issues pertaining to varieties of English mainly focus on the different varieties of English (Kachru, 1985; Tunde-Awe, 2014; Safotso, 2012; Mbufong, 2013). Another trend of researchers study the pedagogic problems in world Englishes (Jenkins, 2012, 2016; Dewey, 2012; Mackay, 2012; Galloway and Rose, 2015). Other researchers investigate intelligibility and world Englishes (Yoshikawa, 2008; Ghobain, 2016; Nelson, 2011). Issues related to assessment have not been thoroughly investigated by research yet. Publications focusing on assessment issues in world Englishes are very few. The motivation of this suggested book stems from the limited research in this field. There is another impetus behind proposing this publication. This is mainly due to the belief that world Englishes is a new field of study. It is advancing.

The main aim of the proposed book is to address assessment in multilingual English; it is an opportunity to identify methods of assessing multilingual learners and to tackle the issues of assessing the different styles of learners. Contributions should be based on a solid review of the literature and should focus on unfolding description of the research methodology. Proposed chapters should provide thoroughly discussions of the findings.

Proposals for chapters on topics relevant to this book may include, but are not limited to:

-World Englishes: History and development

- The different varieties of English

-Ways of assessing the new varieties

-Issues in the process of assessment

- The effect of world Englishes on language assessment

-Cases studies/ empirical studies of assessing the emergent varieties: strengths and limitations

- The future of World Englishes in language assessment

Potential contributors are invited to submit a 1000-word proposal by October 31st, 2018, including the following information:
