I am studying the applicability of subsurface drainage simulation models (eg WaSim, DRAINMOD, EnDrain) in design and evaluation of subsurface drainage systems. Unfortunately they dont have automated calibration. How best can I calibrate and validate these models, with long term measured water table depths and drain discharges?
I think that you have correctly identified your first evaluation step. Try plotting the model outputs and data that you have on the same figure so that you can visually assess their agreement/disagreement.
It may not necessarily be a calibration question but making sure your baseline assumptions and model components accurately represent your system.

The plots of the model outputs vs measured data are visually showing significant disagreement, and numerous literature is showing that these models were being calibrated by trial and error, which is time consuming. That is why I was asking if there is another way of optimising the model parameters for calibration, instead of trial and error.
