Can anyone recommend a valid and relaible metabolic calculator to estimate basal metabolic rate and calorific needs? An additional benefit would be a basic daily dietary analysis spreadsheet (Excel-based).
there is a lack of good evidence for most equations predicting BMR - Harris Benedict and Schofield have been the most commonly cited historically. Probably the most commonly used equations now are the Henry equations, (Henry 2005 - link below) which have been evaluated and are the most applicable to health populations. They are reccommnede by SACN (2011)
There are several different dietaryu nalysis programmes eg Windiets, Compeat - do you have a dietitian or reg nutritionist locally you could talk to to see what they use?
It depends on your targeted population. Harris Benedict and Schofield are common. Henry equation is also okay.
Mifflin-St Jeor equation is also suggested as the best for resting metabolic rate in healthy nonobese and obese adults (Article Comparison of Predictive Equations for Resting Metabolic Rat...
). However, if you are going to measure BMR for Chinese, Liu's equation is a well-validated equation for healthy adults.
So it really depends on your targeted population
1) Whether it is healthy/has certain disease
2) Ethnicity
BMR would be affected by disease due to inflammation, stress, etc. Be careful the equations are usually different for males and females. You can find the information on the Internet.
