I am doing a reaction synthesis by the process of demethylation. I am dealing with an anhydrous solvent like anhydrous DCM, anhydrous chloroform under 0-degree celsius. In literature, there is mention the condition is at room temperature. is there possibility that, the reaction must be under nitrogen gas due to the present of anhydrous chemical in the reaction?
Of course it should be better to use inert gas argon or nitrogen to prevent humidity from air. It is no matter reaction occurs at room temperature or evaluated temperature. But if your reaction is less water sensetive, you should again use anhydrous solvents with an appropriate CaCl2 drying tube to prevent it without inert system. If you have an inert system use it it is of course more safe and appropriate to make air or water sensetive reactins. Goodluck
If you are doing reaction at 00C or at RT then its preferably better use N2 for inert atmosphere or you can use CaCl2 guard tube to prevent moisture.
Anhydrous solvents should be regarded as specialty chemicals as they are expensive to prepare in both time and cost. By all means use an inert atmosphere regardless of temperature. Assemble your dried apparatus and flush with the inert gas before adding anything. What type of compound are you trying to demethylate and what are the conditions?
