When there is no more war, you can ban boxing and the other martial arts. Until then, I want my soldiers to be the best warriors possible. Boxing teaches punching skills the other martial arts do not.
There are many sports that are far more dangerous that boxing....should we ban all of them?
Our responsibility as medical personnel is promote as safer practice.
Just bear in mind some outcomes of boxing as "Dementia Pugilistica".
People are free to choose if they want to box or not. Even if you ban it as a sport, there will always be underground fighters and competitions. Moreover, if you ban boxing, don't you have to ban all the other martial arts? Where do you draw the line? Will you also ban Judo and Wrestling that are fantastic for fitness and character development, and in the case of wrestling, a founding sport of the Olympic games?
We have a tough ethical question here.
Gordon L Warren if it's about training soldiers, then boxing could persist only within the military, as a one type of training. Moreover, I don't think the outcomes of current wars really depend on punching skills.
Georgios Mavropalias I totally agree that boxers can choose for themselves, or their parents can do it while they're not mature enough. Now, we need to make sure they're provided with enough objective information on the health aftermaths of the sports.
Also, great point about where to draw the line. I suggest between sports in which perucusions are allowed and those that only rely on pehension.
Boxing is safer than, for example swimming or cycling and much more than driving a car. And you drive a car every day.
All professional sports are unhealthy. Even though, sports like gymnastics, swimming, cycling, running... that are traditionaly consider to be safe and sound. They ruine lifes, and let athlete without educatin, culture, normal family life, with a lot of injuries and harms coused by training, regular use of steroids, alchochol, drugs and medications.
When you be start losing two consecutive fights it signals the end of boxing career.
