why bonding between carbon fibers and an epoxy matrix should be excellent, whereas bonding between silicon nitride fibers and a silicon carbide matrix should be poor ??
in the epoxy matrix / carbon fibers composite, strength and stiffness are the main properties to improve and therefore the bond between fiber and matrix should be strong. This is to minimize the detachment of the fiber and maximize the transmission of stress from the weak matrix to the strong fibers. In the silicon nitride fibers / silicon carbide matrix composite, fracture strength is the main property to be improved. The weakness of the bond allows the fiber to begin to escape from the matrix. This process disperses energy, thus increasing fracture resistance.
