currently i am working on steel connection using abaqus (quasi static analysis) .i applied the pretension force by thermal load on shank . the problems as followed :
1. is it right to make trial and error till reach ur required pretension force , since the principal calculations didn't give the required temperature .
2. Total energy increased too much during preloading step , and keeped with same high value during loading step , did i miss something .

Why did you apply temperature instead of load for the pretension bolt? Does the pretension in the bolt caused by temperature?

actually i am using explicit solver in abaqus , the pretension load is not available in explicit so we used a temperature load on bolt shank instead
