I am looking for references on benefits of employment preferably PREVIOUS employment, if not, then long term or current employment - perhaps some associations with quality of life, perceptions of safety, social capital, social resources, etc... please help if you can.

Long term employment could give you a sense of security and stability; actually, depending on the level of your satisfaction or whether you like it or not! In some cases, you could also feel bored with the usual duties and need new job, skills, environment and the like.

I would hypothesize that previous employment, and social capital gains, are not immediately lost in unemployment, but that there is a slow degradation of social capital in certain key areas. Additionally, I think self-esteem is correlated with certain losses of social capital over time. However, Previous employment makes it easier to get a new job, and has allocated the "set point" high. Thus the previously employed have more "room" to make life changes before large scale social degradation sets in. Add onto that skill sets used, learned, and training acquired are an asset that one takes with them when they leave, and facilitate future opportunities.
