As for literature on children's language development you can profit a lot from being acquainted with Lev Vygostky's social cultural theory and Piaget's theory of cognitive development. I would suggest the following books:
Vygotsky, L. (1978), Mind and society: The development of higher psychological processes. Harvard University Press: Cambridge, Massachusetts;
Vygotsky, L (1962) . Thought and language. The MIT Press, Cambridge. Massachusetts;
Piaget, J. (1926). The language and thought of the child. London: Kegan Paul Trench Trubner.
As for children's and adolescents social development the following two book are a must.
Selman, R. (1980). The growth of interpersonal understading. New York: Academic Press;
Erikson, E. (1980). Identity and the life-cycle. New York: Morton and Company.
