In my opinion, the BRI is a symbol of China's global vision, which has been a form of 'globalisation with Chinese characteristics'. There have been many facets in the global impact that the initiative will have. While the BRI, as with much of Chinese foreign policy, has often been characterised as an economic venture, it is also expressive of China's wider ambitions concerning its desire to play a wider role on the world stage, an ambition that has been expressed by the China Dream and Xi's call for a ;Third Revolution' focused on China's role rather than its development.
Another aspect of the initiative has been the geopolitical dimension, which has been part of the roots of how it is perceived as a threat. This has partially been in how it is seen as a potential mechanism for Eurasian integration, which raises the spectre of Mackinder's Geographical Pivot of History, where land based powers compete with maritime hegemons with the advent of rail. Such a notion has been prevalent with the BRI's focus on land routes.
What I believe is the wider implications of the initiative both in my country and the wider world is that it signifies the greater role that China is playing. This presents both an opportunity and a challenge, an aspect that will become particularly crucial in the light of Brexit. Even before the BRI was announced, there had been elements of this, with the case of the AIIB and London's push to become the European capital of the Renminbi. In addition, by invoking the legacy of the Silk Roads, the BRI also suggests a challenge to the dominant paradigms and assumptions of the past, with the experiences that formed the basis for these assumptions being somewhat limited in their application when trying to chart the course of China's path. It is this aspect that I believe is characteristic of China's wider challenge and will likely be one of the dominant issues of international relations in the 21st century, with the necessity to create a new paradigm to better chart the course of this century.
Global ambitions of any country, once recognized as a global threat, used to become a serious risk factor, and leads to a global resistance. It's been a number of times in the history, and there's no warranty it won't happen again.
